Representation

The seven ares of representation in the media are as follows; Gender, Age, Ethnicity, Sexuality, Class and status, Physical ability/disability and Regional identity. Within the media each of these represented using mainly stereotypes.
Gender
Ethnicity
Sexuality
Class and status
Physical ability/disability
Regional identity

Sexuality and Skins

We looked at the opening scene from the first episode of ‘Skins’ in this scene we looked more closely at the character Tony Stonem. Firstly knowing his last name is Stonem gives us an insight into what we can think his character is going to be like because his name connotes with drugs and one in particular ‘weed’. But with this there is a juxtaposition in what is to follow. When we see him get dressed you see that all of his cloths are neatly folded, this is not what we would associate with the stereotype of a drug user.

The scene actually opens with a shot of him lying directly in the middle of his bed, this is no unusual feat but realizing his duvet cover is of two naked people, a man and a woman, suggest to us about his sexual orientation. Looking further you see he is almost rigid in the way he sleeps and that he his a wake. Only when his alarm clock goes of does he begin to move and the camera jumps to a shot of him sitting bolt upright at the edge of his bed.

In the scene we find allot out including that Tony is confident, this is shown when he watches a woman across the street get changed. This also links in with how precise he is because he sets his watch to remind him to go over to the window. Not only is he confident he is also vain because it shows him doing a workout routine and then checking himself out in the mirror.

These lead to propose that he is wealthy; his weights and clothes (brands like Fred Perry) not to mention the stereo system he uses to sneak his sister into the house. It is clear that he has a good relationship with his sister, firstly she is younger than him, around 15-17 years old, and when she walks down the street in the morning after obviously being out all night in revealing cloths only worn to attract the opposite sex he doesn’t bat an eyelid. Its not just his sister he seems to have a good relationship with it also seems to be his mother and its his father that he doesn’t get on well with, its not evident why or weather this will continue to explain something. But it may show he has a better relationship with women and knows how to treat them to get something he wants.

Avatar

The actor Sam Worthington who plays the main Jake Sully was unknown to the British audience and relatively unheard of in America, before casted in Avatar he was only in TV series and even on the television he was only in a few episodes. But looking at his profile it is clear to see that his role in the highest grossing film of all time has helped propel his career. And he now has 9 new film he's in which considering the film has been out less than a year in the UK is astonishing.
The other main star in the film Zoe Saldana had been in more productions than he co-star but still was yet undiscovered, she had been in big films as Pirates of the Caribbean but just as one of the crew. Like Sam she has a list of no less than 8 upcoming films since the release of Avatar in 2009, including a new Star Trek sequel.
The genre of the film does nothing to understand why it did so well, it is classed as an action film which does intrigue allot of people but it also has other genres such as adventure, fantasy and sci-fi. With the majority of the film being a sci-fi film a big part of the public wouldn’t be interested in going to see the film because as we know with other science fiction films such as moon and 2001: A Space Odyssey who's both gross revenue of their films is less than half of the budget of Avatar.
The production budget for the film was $237 million dollars which is considerably more than the $75 million for ‘independence day’ starring Will Smith which is also labelled a sci-fi. As I have said avatar has no huge name stars and cost over 3 times as much as one with the big names (independence day) which goes someway to suggest where all the budget went on. The special affects.
The gross takings of the film stands at $2,777,450,902 superseding the second highest grossing film, Titanic also directed by James Cameron, by $934,260,132.
Other reasons why the film did so well is that it was the first film made properly for 3D and because they released it in 2D and 3D and then re-released it just added the billions they made. Plus it was distributed by 20th Century Fox who is owned by New Corporation and is the third largest media conglomerate helped towards the marketing of the film.
The films director James Cameron had previously worked on some major titles such as ‘The Terminator’, ‘Aliens’, ‘The Abyss’ and his last movie before his return to films in 2009 was ‘Titanic’ which was the highest grossing film of all time. Between ‘Titanic’ and ‘Avatar’ Cameron went of to do documentaries and focused on the underwater. He did also co-developed the digital 3-D Fusion Camera System which had been used on many films including ‘Spy Kids 3D’ and ‘Journey to the Center of the Earth’. So when he announce his return to the film scene with a whole new film which was nothing like what was out at the moment people were eager to see the film.
What did help the marketing and was classed as below the line marketing was the controversy and the hype, as none of the movie was set on Earth or even a planet we know of and most of the scenes need to be completely computer generated it received criticisms before It even came out. And when it came out people flocked to see it because of this which created the initial hype.
But it wasn’t just the 3D experience that drew people to the cinemas because looking at the sales of the 2D DVD it was labelled ‘fastest-selling Blu-ray of all time after just four days in U.S’ and sold more copies in that four days than ‘Batman: The Dark Knight’ did in 1 1/2 years. And personally i would definitely class it as a good film and not just a 3D phenomenon.

Ethnicity: Clip

This clip of Eastenders and Coronation Street for ‘Children in Need’ is purposefully done for comedy reasons but does show us that ethnicity is very important to British TV in understanding peoples backgrounds. They do this through stereotypes, the clip above is of two what appears Asian women but in the scene one of the women ‘Zainab Masood’ claims that ‘Sunita Alahan’ isn’t what she classes as Asian because she does not speak with a typical Asian accent associated with the culture. She also takes offense of they way she has dressed, in her words she says ‘some people don’t have to dress up to prove their Asians’ Zainab reveals that to wear a sari isn’t a fancy dress that you have to wear to prove or to emphasize your ethnicity but a style choice to go with your culture. For the stereotypes is teaches us that there are some of them we need to enforce an ethnicity such as in this case their skin colour, but some that we do not necessarily need, the sari and accent.

Ethnicity

Within british TV ethnic minorities are portrayed through their stereotypes such as;

Kidulthood

The first camera angle in the movie is an eye-level one but from a far distance or safe distance, i say this because it seems as if it could be from another child in the playground. This is also emphasised in the editing, it is very fast past and your only on one section for a few seconds which makes you think its a student because they are quickly looking around and seeing different people in the playground.

throughout this sequence it keeps cutting to another scene of a drill, the camera angle here s a close up all you can see is the drill, it doesn't let you in to who is using it or what he is drilling. this does two things it build suspense by making viewers question what he or she is doing. it also shows that there is calm even though outside is chaos.

the story-line then moves onto a scene inside the class room. its just about when a fight is going to take place. when the fight starts up the camera angle changes between each person, when is from the point of view of the girl getting beaten up the camera is low down and looking up. on the other hand when its the bully it is high looking down. this shows that the bully is in control of her victim it also goes along way to show each of their social status.

other camera angle used during the fight is one through the eyes of the bully victim, in this section it shows the bully and her friends coming right up close to the camera, this is to show how they were in her face. it also makes the watcher feel the intimidation of what the bullies have inflicted on her victim.

Kick-Ass

Find out how it was produced, what it was based on, problems in making the film. The directors views on the British film industry, how they saved money, the tech they used, how the films rating affected its performance, controversy surrounding the film, promotion and the soundtrack.
The film was produced at the same time as the book/comic was re-released, but they chose to change the film for the comic because Matthew Vaughan ‘doesn’t do happy endings’. He changed it so that the lead got the girl, unlike in the book. Another reason for why he had to do this was to gain money to make the film in the first place.
The film was based on the comic book which was first released in 2008 and the last one only six week before the film came out, as I have said the comic and the films are slightly different as they have a different ending.
The makers of the film came across a few problems, the main being that they had cast a 12 year old girl that swears. This then slapped a certificate 15 onto the film. The problem was not only did people disagree with the swearing but as the film was marketed at 14 year old boys, they had released a film that the target audience couldn't view.
The director views on the British film industry is one that in a few years time (he suggest 3) that Britain could have the worlds largest film industry. He says that to have this we need directors to stop taking big sums of £20 million up front and only take £5 million. At the moment he thinks we have the best films but just no industry.
To save money the team chose to shoot the film in the UK instead of Manhattan where the film is set. To do this they had to use huge green screens and high resolution pictures that of Manhattan that were edited to make it seem as if it was actually shot there. The cost saving here was that it would too expensive to get streets closed down in Manhattan.
The tech involved with the film was state of the art ive explained why they had to go about shooting in london and how they did it but they also did something with the sound. They made sure they got the best sound recording so that the actors didn’t have to re-record the sound and try to put the same emotion into at a later stage.
I have already gone over this but having a rating of a 15 made Kick-Ass a non four quadrant film before it was even shown. In the section that couldn’t see the movie was what the film was actually made for young teenage boys.
Controversy over this film obviously come from the fact they have 12 year olds swearing but only is it this that makes people have a controversial thought about the film. It also features the same 12 year old getting shot by her dad. The film also seems to almost glorify crime and weapons with showing a room full of guns in several of its scene. The room belongs to the ‘good guys’.
The marketing and promotion of the film was seen to be bad in the eyes of its creators. They believed it had been wrongly marketed. In the trailers they played on tv it showed all the humor of the film, which in normal circumstances would of been good, but it made movie goers to think it was another spoof such as the ones like, date movie and superhero movie. This may be because the comic was unknown to allot of people so unlike the spiderman and hulk movies people didn’t have a background for their ideas to grow from.
The soundtrack for the movie had many different and ranging artists. It has artist ranging from The Prodigy to Elvis, this does add to the dimensions of the film but like most thinks about the film it has been criticized because it isn't its own music’. The opening scene for example closely resembles the opening scene to superman with the clouds and writing. The same music a superman confirms that it is a copy of the film. This does nothing to dispel the thoughts that the movie is nothing but a spoof.

Moon - Audience

Before people even got to watch the film a large proportion of its potential audience was knocked out, this was because the film was certificated a 15 (doing this it also made the film not a 5 quadrant one). Using the genre of Sci-Fi it took out a further lot of the potential audience, these being mainly women as the Sci-Fi area is seen more of a mans cup of tea.

Sam Rockwell (Sam Bell) is not a famous person within the movie bizz, this meant that people didn't primarily go to see him, this may have been different if the films main character was someone like Brad Pitt. It does however have Kevin Spacey as the voice of Gerty and this may have brought in some of the final viewers.

The budget also let the film down in two other areas, firstly he could afford to properly advertise the film, the only way people got wind of it was him talking at Sci-Fi functions and then relying on word of mouth to spread the word. however he did do a talk at NASA about how believable the film was and this may have attracted the American viewers (he also used American Phrases such as 'God bless america'). He also couldn't afford decent special effects and the biggest cost of special effects (and the highest costing scene in the film) was when he was playing table tennis with himself and the scene lasted only about 5 seconds, all the other time he used a double.

He does use references to other films including '2001 A Space Odyssey' with the line from Gerty 'Im sorry Sam i can't let you do that'. Other references come in the song and at the start him wearing a t-shirt saying 'Wake me up when it's time to quit'.

Moon

This film was created by Duncan Jones and stars Sam Rockwell and Kevin Spacey (he was only as the voice for the robot "Gerty") he also was only on set for half a day and yet still got the highest pay. The actor Sam Rockwell was originally wanted by Duncan Jones but Sam felt it wasn't for him but still wanted to work on a film with/for Duncan so they went away and Duncan came back with the script for Moon.

Moon only had a budget of $5,000,000 and to cut costs Duncan had such a small cast as well as being filmed in only 33 days. including in the small price Duncan chose to use actors instead of digitised images as they were cheaper to use. Bill Pearson created a  360-degree set of the moon. Even in the editing phase he cut corners by using companies such as Cinesite which is notorious for their cheeper costs for its independent films. Finally they kept costs down by not sending any reales to the OSCAR committee (so its difficult to tell how well the professional world though of it).

All in all the film took  $9,747,108 worldwide and the UK took almost a 5th of that. Even though it seems the film made a $4.5 million profit, Jones is still trying to pay of his debts. this is because he had to borrow allot of money from different places and with interest it mounts up.

Casualty - Series 25 Episode 1

This is the first episode of the 25 series long tv hospital drama 'Casualty' this episode is entitled 'No Place Like Home'. in this episode i could see allot of Vladimir Propps' theory of their being many different types of people in the programme and these can be seen in nearly all programmes/films, these include people like the hero, anti-hero and villain. All the way up to 32 different ones.

In Casualty i see more than one hero, i see all the doctures, nurses ect to be the heros on the surface but as you look deeper you see that they do have different characteristics.

Here is 'Nick Jordan' played by Michael French, it seems that he is the hero in it because he's the one in the suit and acts like he knows what he is doing whilst still keeping calm. but i feel he is more of an Anti-Hero because in previous episodes he has seen to be doing thing this is very un-hero like such as drugs.

Suzanne Packer who plays 'Tess Bateman' i feel is the donor of the show, not only has she been in the show since 2003 to the present day, she doesn't have a high position and her position is to help the doctors which helps us to form my conclusion. this is emphasised by the fact that she is compelled to help people that she doesn't have to.

Lucy Gaskell is playing 'Kirsty Clements' in the show seems to me to be the princess in this episode, the story of the episode is based highly around her and what happened between her and 'Adam Truman' and how he cant have her, which is what Propp describes as the princess.

Merlin Trailer - Male Representation

'What representations of gender are constructed by the extract through the use of: Mise en scene / Editing / Use of camera /  sound?'

The first person we see in the trailer is Merlin himself this tells us from the start that the programme is going to be about him and being a man it suggest it may be centred around men. we also see caves and him exploring, this has connotations to men because it is usually the men that explore rather than women.

throughout the whole of the trailer there is hardly any women in it and there is only one main women in the show. we also see men fighting the which is a very manly thing to do and generally only men fight, either to show their powerful or to win fights. one woman that is in the trailer is made out to be a witch and in the times merlin is set allot of women and it was normally only women were accused of being a witch. there is also only a king and no queen, this shows that man only are capable to run a land.

in the sound there is only men speaking apart from a woman saying only one line "merlin" and even that sounds mysterious.

The Four Film Productions in Hot Fuzz

Universal

Universal studios is a subsidiary of NBC Universal and part of the 6 major film companies, and was founded in 1912 by Carl Laemmle (it is one of the oldest American film companies still in continuos production). It owns a large film library from the earliest decades of the cinema revolution to more contemporary works. This includes Kick-Ass, Bruno, Inglorious Basterds, Wanted and of course Hot Fuzz. Being part of NBC it also own the right to a good range of TV shows.

Working Title

This is a British based film company and was found by Tim Bevan and Sarah Radclyffe in 1983, it also produces feature films and TV programs. Currently it is still owned by Tim but Eric Fellner has taken over Sarah's half. They prodominatly produces British films such as Billy Elliot, Four Weddings And A Funeral, Jonny English, Notting Hill and Hot Fuzz too.

Studio Canal

Studio Canal is a French film company and it owns the 3rd largest film library in the world and is part of the Canal+ Group which is owned by Vivendi SA. Pierre Lescure founded it in 1988. Films included in their library are Free Willy, Terminator 2 and Hot Fuzz.

Big Talk Productions

Like Working Title Big  Talking Productions is an English film and television production company founded in 1995 by Nira Park. The company has produced films Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz both of which featured Simon Pegg and Nick Frost (spaced which is a television sitcom starred these two actors and produced by BTP)

Hot Fuzz - Its All British!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XpeYvuV5J_I&feature=player_embedded
(this is there first 10 minutes of Hott Fuzz)

The sound in the first 30 seconds of the opening titles is dedicated to whistles and sirens of British police through the ages, this is not only the first of many major references to Britain it also tells us that the police force has changed from a whistle to a generated siren.

The next icon of Britain is when Simon Pegg holds up his ID badge, this also relates to the American audience as both forces hold badges but to prove its British it has a the crown on the badge, relating to the Queen.

He also speaks with a noticeable English accent. And when he talks us through his qualifications and where he has studied he uses allot of noticeable British places such as; London, Canterbury, Hendon.

In this screenshot we can see there is a predominant colour of blue which has connotations with the British police force.

Here in the background we can see a run down factory which is left over from the Industrial Revolution, and in the foreground the houses / street is very british.

When we see Simon Pegg as Nicholas Angel here he is wearing a full traditional British poice uniform, the hat particularly emphasises how British this is and behind him the structure hows lions which has a correlation with the British, there is also the obvious of the Union Flag.

This is a snap shot of Angel in China town a specific and well known place in London.

This shot has a chav in which is often associated with British culture.

These four scences are all of sport and very British sports like; chess, fencing, martial arts and running.

If you can make out in this he is using hand cuffs which i know are universal but still they have a special link to Britain. When he explains how he got stabbed in the hand he uses the phrase "father christmas" which is mainly what British people call him where ass American tend to use "Saint Nicholas".

This is one of the most obvious British links with Vodafone and then with UK added on the end.

This emphasis the Britishness because we call them taxis in Britain where in USA the use the term "Cab".

This an extremely British road sign with the colours and the rose which is called the English Rose and comes from two roses in England previously.

This shows a church which are everywhere in the UK but in other countries they are less and they loom different.

If you can see the 3 signs are for the AA, Best Western and an other company sporting the English Rose again. It is alo raining in the shot which is what kost most people think of the weather in Britain.

The decor in this room is highly Scottish again making a reference to Britain. also in the script is the word "hag" which relates to old Britain.

These two shots show a swan and the word "Castle" both which only really occur in Britain. In the final part he also goes to a "pub" whereas americans go to a "bar".

Spike Jonze - Presentation

My group got given Spike Jonze as a director to talk and do a presentation about. We all decided what parts we wanted to do. Max took Biography and Style, Becky chose to find clips of his work, i chose to talk about the audience he directs for and finally Toni and Daisy were putting together all our work into a  presentation. we then went away on our own a researched the different parts of the presentation, i found that IMDB website was a great help as it told me all the films, music videos and adverts he directed. We then used prezi to create the presentation as it looks better than something like powerpoint. once the presentation was done we all went away again and wrote a script for section we had chose to do.

In the next lesson we had to present our findings to the rest of the class whilst they presented theirs to us.

Magazine Front Cover & Contents Page

FRONT COVER

CONTENTS PAGE

Post Production of Magazine

I then chose my 4 photos, 1 for the main "Front Cover",which was the one of Georges mid shot, page and 3 for the "Contents Page", i started by cutting out all the photos from their backgrounds using a magnetic lasso tool in  Photoshop. Next i started work on the "Front Cover". I decided to use red and black for the text, i didn't add in a third colour because i thought with the colour on Georges top it would be too hectic. I also tried to use the same red that was on Georges top for the masthead so it made the magazine look professional as well as enhancing the link between George and the magazine. when adding text i firstly did the masthead as using font "Helvetica" which then carried  out throughout the rest of the pages, i chose this font as it is a very striking font yet still easy to read. I added  a different colour background colour that was still subtle so not to distract from the main subject and text of the magazine. And finally i enhanced the photo of George by taking away the shine in his glasses and any moles or spots and making his t-shirt brighter so it stood out.

For the "Contents Page" firstly i added a soft grey background and i mainly used texts of different sizes to add character to the page, i chose to use the same green as the one in the school logo in the photo i took to try and make the page as professional as i could. i added the three photos, again cutting them out using the magnetic lasso tool and enhancing them slightly, on the contents page to finish. But the last thing i did was add a page number to the contents page.

Production of Magazine

For making my magazine i started to take photos. These had to be a medium shot for the front page and could be other ones for the contents page. I took a main one of George for the "Front Cover" and several more smaller ones of things that are in the magazine (the schools logo) for the "Contents Page" we then uploaded them as a group to a computer and emailed the photos to everyone in out group so we could start putting the pages together.

Continuity Prelim

This is mine, George Hextall and Ollie Wrights continuity video.

Magazine Brief and Pre-Production

For our magazine prelim we had a brief that we had to create a magazine front cover and contents page that was suitable for the school. the front cover had to have a mid shot of a person a masthead and a couple of snaps of information. it also needed a barcode. the contents page needed further photos and what is going to be in the magazine and what page their going to be on. we then designed the pages on paper and add the details to it so it was easier when we took the photos.

I like the front cover of this magazine because it uses a bold and in your face fount and colour. i also like how the picture draws you in because if how big it is. What i also think is good about it and i want to replicate in my magazine id the simplistic style of it, there is little text on the front cover and the text that is on there only relates to the image.

Production

After pre production we were given another groups story board to film, this allowed us to see what other peoples story boards were like, it also meant that we could learn for in the future how to improve our own story boards. i found out that to make the filming as easy as possible you need to give clear but detailed instructions. with the story board we were given it was at some points difficult to follow the groups ideas because they hadn't explained well enough how they wanted their props to be used, we had to use our own initiative to make the story flow. They had also not put their frames in order but that wasn't too mush of a problem because they had numbered them correctly.

Pre Production

For the film we split the film up into 4 sections one for each of, i had the section when the character is walking toward the door. My first frame was of the character walking towards the door, i used a long shot as the camera angle. the next frame is of a point of view shot from his feet looking up at his face (again walking towards the camera. The third shot is a shot using an over the shoulder camera angle with the character walking closer to the door. The last shot for me was the close up one of the characters hand on the handle. We decided as a group that we would cut the sound out for the start (up until the door closes behind the character) and add a piece of music.

Hot Fuzz Opening Analysis

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8JLEbh4Cn0c

The first shot of “Hot Fuzz” is of Nicholas Angel walking towards the camera. He is centered so that our focus is on him showing he is the most important character in this scene. The doors also open for him even though he is far away as if they anticipate his arrival. We yet don't know who he is because there is a bright light from behind him making him a silhouette, not only does this light make him more of a mysterious man is also makes him seem an angel because the light has resemblances to a halo. Not only does he walk towards the camera the camera also zooms on him emphasizing that he is the most important here. He also walks straight and directly forward showing he is a man that knows what he wants. We could also suggest he is determined because he is the only one in a large what seems entrance, this could be telling us that its a day that not many people work and he has chosen of his own accord to com in.

The sound of this part of the film is cold and clean the only sound made is of his footsteps getting louder and louder as he walks towards the camera, creating the assumption that he has authority and backs up my previous thought that he is alone in this entrance.
At the end of the first shot is a close up of his face, we see that he has a stern face, projecting the thought that he doesn't want any hassle.

There is then a close up of his police id card, this is when we first see that his name is Nicholas Angel, Angel has connotations with good but then Nicholas can be shortened to Nick and that has connotations of bad and the police. Put together both these names contradict each other. This can tell us that maybe as a person Nicholas Angel has duel personalities (maybe a good and a bad side). The picture on his id is the same as his face which could offer the thought he is always in a state of angriness and always on duty.

The next scene is of him walking again but the camera is looking straight ahead at his feet this time, it then changes to a camera looking up at him, this shows and suggest he is more important than the rest of them. He also has the stern look on his face from the previous scene. In this scene he is also surrounded  by vertical bars which have an association with jail.
