Film 4

1. What is Film4's remit (its reason and purpose for being)?
The remit for Film 4 is to proved chance for upcoming directors and those directors that are stabiles but haven’t had the recognition for some time.

2. What types of films are green-lighted by Film4? Give examples of films and genres.
The ones that are green lighted are British; set in Britain such as This Is England which is set in Sheffield and Four Lions also set in Sheffield. They have green lighted Slumdog Millionaire which is not set in England but fits in with the British culture of the UK having a large Asian population. The genres however are all alternative in the way that none of them are meant to be big blockbusters so when Film 4 found that Slumdog was going to do well they changes the release from DVD to cinema.

3. Why is Tessa Ross regarded as "the mother of British film-making" and therefore instrumental for Film4's success?
She is regarded as the mother because she has been described as one of the "three musketeers" of independent film finance. This also fits in with the idea that she isn’t the face of her films but rather the person pushing the people up there. Being a mother means that she nurtures and she has nurtures films into winning awards and with Slumdog winning 8 Oscars, proves that she instrumental in the success of Film 4.

4. How much is Film4's yearly budget and how much of it did "Slumdog Millionaire take up? ( Be careful with this one as co-productions, UK Lottery money and deals with Pathe, etc. helps make Film4's budget stretch further!)
When they made Slumdog Millionaire the budget was £10 million and it took $15 million to make and after the success Film 4 then increased its budget to £15 million.

5. Why does Film4 form partnerships with other companies/individuals?
Film 4 partners with other companies and individuals to gain more money for their projects, because as a company they are small they don’t have enough money to fund films just on their own Slumdog Millionaire would not of happened if Film 4 didn’t use partnerships

6. What is the future for Film4 - budget and film-wise?
The budget has increased by 50% from the £10,000,000 to £15,000,000 with Film 4 hoping to boost the overall budget to £50,000,000 in 2011

7. What problems did Film Four face in the naughties?
The problem in the nighties began with 2001 where Film 4 lost £5,700,000 due to Charlotte Grays film that was the most expensive Film 4 have ever made. Alos in 2006 announced a huge change to their original business model due to struggles. What they set out was to pay TV on a subscription service to bringing in adverts as they thought this is how they would make their money
