We looked at the opening scene from the first episode of ‘Skins’ in this scene we looked more closely at the character Tony Stonem. Firstly knowing his last name is Stonem gives us an insight into what we can think his character is going to be like because his name connotes with drugs and one in particular ‘weed’. But with this there is a juxtaposition in what is to follow. When we see him get dressed you see that all of his cloths are neatly folded, this is not what we would associate with the stereotype of a drug user.
The scene actually opens with a shot of him lying directly in the middle of his bed, this is no unusual feat but realizing his duvet cover is of two naked people, a man and a woman, suggest to us about his sexual orientation. Looking further you see he is almost rigid in the way he sleeps and that he his a wake. Only when his alarm clock goes of does he begin to move and the camera jumps to a shot of him sitting bolt upright at the edge of his bed.
In the scene we find allot out including that Tony is confident, this is shown when he watches a woman across the street get changed. This also links in with how precise he is because he sets his watch to remind him to go over to the window. Not only is he confident he is also vain because it shows him doing a workout routine and then checking himself out in the mirror.
These lead to propose that he is wealthy; his weights and clothes (brands like Fred Perry) not to mention the stereo system he uses to sneak his sister into the house. It is clear that he has a good relationship with his sister, firstly she is younger than him, around 15-17 years old, and when she walks down the street in the morning after obviously being out all night in revealing cloths only worn to attract the opposite sex he doesn’t bat an eyelid. Its not just his sister he seems to have a good relationship with it also seems to be his mother and its his father that he doesn’t get on well with, its not evident why or weather this will continue to explain something. But it may show he has a better relationship with women and knows how to treat them to get something he wants.
